Rimonabant
About Rimonabant – The New Weight Loss Drug
Rimonabant is the latest addition to the various weight loss drugs available in the UK and Europe at present. Manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis of Paris, Rimonabant has been widely proclaimed as the ultimate drug for weight loss treatment of obese patients and is being marketed under the brand name Acomplia in the UK and Europe.
Rimonabant helps patients lose weight and also brings several other health benefits. Rimonabant or Acomplia works by restricting the cannabinoid receptors in the brain. Sanofi claims that in controlled studies, Rimonabant was found to reduce several inches off patients' waistlines and helped them shed as many as 25-30 pounds. Rimonabant is also believed to work directly on fat cells to reduce several major risk factors for heart disease. It is known to increase HDL – the good cholesterol – by almost 27%, the highest for any drug.
The company released new data about Rimonabant in June in which it has claimed the drug also helps in controlling blood sugar. However as with all other medications, Rimonabant also has some side effects which include anxiety and nausea among others.
Rimonabant has been approved for sale in the UK and the European Union countries and is already among the highest selling weight loss drug in these countries. Sanofi filed for FDA approval of Rimonabant in June 2005 for selling it in the US with brand name Zimulti but is yet to receive permission to market Rimonabant in the US. It is expected that FDA will grant Rimonabant entry into the US sometime in late 2006 or early 2007.
What is Rimonabant’s Action?
Rimonabant is a CB1 receptor blocker. CB1 is one of two receptors found in the newly described physiological system – the Endocannabinoid System (EC System). This system is believed to play a key role in food intake regulation and energy expenditure.
CB1 receptors are present on the surfaces of various cells in the body including fat cells. The cells in the body are involved in lipid and glucose metabolism while those in the brain are believed to determine appetite. Cannabinoids act on these receptors to make them overactive and thereby prompt people to eat more.
This led researchers at Sanofi-Aventis to study and develop Rimonabant which acts on the Cannabinoid system to reduce the urge to eat food. Rimonabant works by selectively targeting and blocking the CB1 receptors and thereby helps normalize the overactive EC system to reduce hunger pangs.
